During the week of August 30-Sept. 5, 1998, Team A reported the
following problems:
- On Thursday, there was an abandoned sofa in the alley behind the house
for sale at 1410 Nottoway. Given the recent, unfortunate experience with street
people sleeping in the similar sofas behind the Samis Grotto, Winnie called it in to Mr. Treger, who issued a citation.
- The Saab had been on MacArthur, just North of Dot's, for a couple of
weeks with an orange RPD placard on the driver's side window. Winnie called it in.
To her pleasure, she learned that Lt. Tim Morley, formerly downtown in community
relations, now is a shift commander in the Third Precinct. Tim picked up the radio
and told his folks to get the Saab, which they did.
- We got another report of the abandoned scout behind 1310(?) Nottoway.
Winnie consulted the ordinance,
and called it in to Mr. Treger.
- We got a report of graffiti behind CVS. It looks like a new, small
one on the door and perhaps a new one on the cinder block wall.
- On Wednesday, there was a hit and run accident on Pope. Team A
followed the gouge marks in the road to MacArthur, and told the police where to find the
hitting vehicle.
- The persistent pile of trash behind the Shirley Manor brought another
call to Mr. Treger. He
promises a summons by Monday, Sept. 28.
And here is the status of the matters from earlier patrol weeks:
- The drug dealer at the Shirley Manor moved out on August 21. See the
August MAD LUV page for the history of how we got to
this wonderful result. The Safety
Committee met on Sept. 24 to discuss the dealer in the MacArthur Apartments.
- 1603 Claremont has two abandoned cars, one in the driveway and one in the
back yard, and very little paint on the building. On August 10, Winnie called it in to the Neighborhood Preservation folks (who have jurisdiction over the cars) and John
called it in to the codes enforcement
folks (who have jurisdiction over the unpainted house).
Mr. Treger checked it
on Sept. 3. He couldn't find who owns the lot, so he sent the citation to the person
who is paying the water and gas bills. Those folks declined to sign the certified
mail receipt; Mr. Treger promises a subpoena by Monday, Sept. 28. We also have
reports of heavy in-and-out traffic at this address. Please be on the lookout for
strangers making short term visits there.
- The green house at 3802 Brook Road (in the angle between Brook and
Fauquier) keeps drawing a crowd of nice, new cars. It makes us think the folks there
are real party animals, or they are selling something we wouldn't want sold in
Bellevue. Holly Anna says they let her use their hose to water her spectacular
garden in the median, and that they seem like nice kids. Team A continues recording
the license numbers of the vehicles parked there, just in case.
- The change of owners at 1424 Avondale has produced a large pile of trash by the garage
(actually on MacArthur Avenue). When it still was there on August 5, Winnie called it in to Neighborhood Preservation. Mr. Treger cited
it on Sept. 3. The owner paid the City to remove the trash,
but the City said it doesn't do construction debris. Mr. Treger extended his
deadline to Sept. 28.
- See the June 7 news for
the history of the empty house at 1410 Avondale. As of July 14, despite two Notices
of Violation from the City, the sale had not closed and the house still was in the same
miserable condition. John turned the ratchet on July 14 with another letter to the City. On July 16, the grounds had been cleared and equipment
was on the site. The Codes Enforcement folks now say the new
owner has applied for the necessary permits.
On Friday, 9/25 workmen were at 1410 tearing out old floors and repairing the roof. Particularly in light of the behavior of the codes enforcement people, this resolution of this long-standing problem is a major
victory for the neighborhood.
- The scraggly lawn at 4000 Brook Road (house is for sale) was reported
during the week of May 10. A call then from Winnie to
the Realtor resulted in a mowing. The lawn again has gone to seed. On July 15,
the Realtor's sign was missing, so John wrote the owner.
When nothing happened before July 28, Winnie
called it in to Neighborhood Preservation. They summoned the owner to General District Court for a
hearing on August 11. On Sept. 3, the lawn had been mowed.
