During the week of August 2-8, 1998, Team A reported the following
problems:
- The drug dealer at the Shirley Manor continued to ply his trade on
MacArthur Avenue. See the June 7 Team A Outcomes for
some history.
MAD LUV moved out on August 21.
See the August MAD LUV page for the history of
how we got to this wonderful result.
- Winnie called her friend at Samis Grotto about the two sofas out back.
A couple of vagrants were using the sofas to bed down. When the sofas had not
been removed on Aug. 10, Winnie called the Neighborhood Preservation folks
at the City. They told her they already had a complaint, called the Grotto, and the sofas were gone. At the same
time, they asked the Grotto to remove the weeds in the alley. They didn't, and Mr. Treger will cite them during
the week of August 16.
- We had several reports of bushes blocking alleys. Winnie and John
went looking for these; the only one they could find on August 9 was behind 3911 Newport
and 3918 Fauquier. See the Weeds
page for the applicable ordinances. Mr. Treger promised to check it
when he checks the trash at 1424 Avondale.
- One team was waived down about a disturbance at 1415 Avondale. They
called the police, who responded.
- The house for sale at 4500 Brook has trash out back spilling into the
alley. John called the Realtor on
August 10. He said they already had paid the City,
and were waiting for the pickup.
- Team A observed a traffic accident on Fauquier at Claremont. They parked their yellow light behind the crash site
until the police arrived.
- We had several reports of kids on bikes. The yellow light makes
them nervous. Our patrols followed the
groups until they left the neighborhood.
- We had a report of a truck in the alley behind "___ Nottoway."
Rather than search five blocks of alley on both sides of the street, Winnie decided
to wait for a more specific report.
- The Friday night patrol found an inebriated motorcyclist who had fallen
off her bike on MacArthur. They followed her to the Garden Center, where she again
fell off. She refused to let our folks ride the bike home for her. They
followed until she (remarkably) made it home.
- 1603 Claremont has two abandoned cars, one in the driveway and one in the
back yard, and very little paint on the building. On August 10, Winnie called it in to the Neighborhood Preservation folks (who have jurisdiction over the cars) and John
called it in to the codes enforcement
folks (who have jurisdiction over the unpainted house).
Mr. Treger checked it
on Sept. 3. He promised Winnie that the cars will be gone.
- The green house at 3802 Brook Road (in the angle between Brook and
Fauquier) keeps drawing a crowd of nice, new cars. It makes us think the folks there
are real party animals, or they are selling something we wouldn't want sold in
Bellevue. Holly Anna says they let her use their hose to water her spectacular
garden in the median, and that they seem like nice kids. Team A continues recording
the license numbers of the vehicles parked there, just in case.
- The lawn at 1601 Claremont was in terrible condition: The grass was high, the bushes
unkempt, and the alley clogged with greenery; the vines had started to creep in behind the
storm windows. On July 15, John wrote the owner.
When nothing happened before July 28, Winnie called it in to Neighborhood Preservation, which issued a notice of violation. As of Aug. 9, the lawn had been mowed and the bushes cut back out of the
alley.
- The change of owners at 1424 Avondale has produced a large pile of trash by the garage
(actually on MacArthur Avenue). When it still was there on August 5, Winnie called it in to Neighborhood Preservation. Mr. Treger cited it on Sept. 3.
- See the June 7 news for
the history of the empty house at 1410
Avondale. As of July 14, despite two Notices of
Violation from the City, the sale had not closed and the house still was in the same
miserable condition. John turned the ratchet on July 14 with another letter to the City. On July 16, the grounds had been cleared and equipment
was on the site. The Codes Enforcement folks now say the new
owner has applied for the necessary permits. We see junk being hauled out of the
house, and it looks much better just from the cleaned up lawn. Stay tuned.
- The scraggly lawn at 4000 Brook Road (house is for sale) was reported
during the week of May 10. A call then from Winnie to
the Realtor resulted in a mowing. The lawn again has gone to seed. On July 15,
the Realtor's sign was missing, so John wrote the owner.
When nothing happened before July 28, Winnie
called it in to Neighborhood Preservation. They summoned the owner to General District Court for a
hearing on August 11. On Sept. 3, the lawn had been
mowed.
- Please remember to put your names (both of you) on the log sheet, and to
log the mileage.
