The new data from the police department have time and day fields. This led us to
look at when the crime gets reported. For Chamberlayne Ave, it's pretty much what
you would expect: More crime on the weekend and less in the middle of the
week. In contrast, more of the Bellevue crime is in mid week.
We were puzzled by the pattern until Capt. Beadles suggested that most property crime
in a residential neighborhood happens when folks are not home, i.e., during the
week In any event, this probably sends a message to the Patrol.
Here are the Bellevue UCR data for 1993-99 broken out by crime:
Turning to the time of day: Most of the Bellevue crime gets reported in the evening:
The big numbers at midnight almost certainly are anomalous (If you didn't know the time
to fill in the form, what time would you chose?). The big numbers at 08:00 and noon
may reflect the same phenomenon. More likely, it's just that folks find and report
things that happened to their property overnight when they go outside to go to work, i.e.,
around 08:00, and things that happened in the morning when they come home or go out at
noon.
Here are the same data broken out by crime:
Here we see that the 08:00 and noon bumps are driven by the larceny reports,
particularly the larcenies not from auto. Aside from that, the different crimes show
some interesting patterns: Most of the residential burglaries are reported at midday
and suppertime, i.e. they mostly happen during the day. Similarly, much of
the larceny takes place in the daytime. In contrast, the cars mostly get stolen
after supper, and most of the larceny from auto comes in the afternoon and evening.
