During the week of June 6, 1999 Team A logged a pothole
in the 1300 block of Amherst. Winnie called it in.
Team A also logged the three piles of brush in the street in the 4000
block of Crestwood. Winnie tried all over City Hall; the most action she could get
was an offer to pick it up if she would meet them there with $25.
One Team A team got stopped in the 4500 block of Newport to report a
stolen ladder. It was too late to do anything, of course. If anyone knows a
way to convince our neighbors to stop baiting the neighborhood with ladders and other
personal property, please do tell us.
Capt. Diana Presson has decided to take a sabbatical from the Patrol.
Diana is a force to be reckoned with: Her basilisk stare is so fearsome that no
mere mortal can stand up to it. She has more energy, knows more people, and
gets
more done than any two or three ordinary folks. Thanks, Diana.
We can't replace Diana, but Chris Sterling is young enough to not know
how big those shoes are. Chris is our new co-Captain. He and Winnie will be
out to meet you at one end of your August patrol. Welcome, Chris.
The phantom patroller was out again Thursday. This was a male, in
a white Plymouth (in contrast to the report last month of a brown Mercedes). He had a
flashing yellow light but no signs on the sides. Team A spotted him twice last month
during the day. We can use this kind of energy: If you know who he is, please direct him
to Capt. Winnie or Capt. Chris and we'll get him signed up.
We have a report that Codes Enforcement has reinspected 1603 Claremont
and declared that there are no violations. John has a FOIA request in process to find out.
In the meantime, somebody has moved in, mowed the lawn, and parked another car with no
license tags in the driveway. Capt. Winnie called in the car.
Other than that, it was a quiet week in Bellevue.
See the Safety
Committee pages for news of all the police calls at the
MacArthur Apartments and what the Safety Committee is doing about it.
The lawn at 1320 Avondale was approaching waist-high.
The neighbor said the new owner is a nurse who has been absent recently. Capt. Winnie
called it in to Environmental. With Mr. Treger gone we don't have much hope for the kind
of response we have learned to enjoy. Bad news for Bellevue.
Mr. Treger's replacement, Mr. Kreger is still on the learning curve. When Capt.
Winnie called him to follow up on the 1320 question and, perhaps, to start building a new
relationship he interrupted to ask, "What is it you want, Ma'am?" Winnie
told him she wanted to follow up on her earlier complaint about the deteriorating
condition of 1320 Avondale. He then said he was "too busy" to talk about
it, and would call her back on Monday. Monday was Memorial Day.
There is no reason to put up with that kind of behavior. Here is John's Freedom of Information Act request in response.
Apparently one of the 'phone calls did some good. On May 17 the environmental
people cited 1320 for weeds and refuse and on May 18 the Code Enforcement folks cited for
the disrepair of the garage, which is falling in and open at the rear. When Winnie
called to follow up they told her the violations had been corrected. By
inspection of the lawn that statement
was not true.
We are having a rash of property crime in the hours after midnight. If you would
like to do a late, late patrol, please call Winnie.
We have some after-the-fact Good News (perhaps) about 1603 Claremont.
