In March, 1999, the City put in all-way stop signs at Bellevue & Fauquier and at Fauquier & Claremont.  We started to hear about it almost immediately:

  • 3/18/99:  I think the four way stop sign on Bellevue is great...I drove through there this evening and the reduction in speed is quite apparent. Hats off to all the Bellevue brass who made it happen. Have you ever noticed how all this kind of stuff...stop signs, new pavement in front of the shops on Bellevue, new sidewalks on Laburnum...all seems to happen in the spring before City Council elections?

  • 5/15/99:  The 4-way stops are nice..... now we just have to work on getting people to stop at the signs. On the other hand some people, who do stop, seem to think that if they can go faster after the sign they can make up for the time lost for stopping.   And Chevy Chase gets the ones that try and beat the light to get to Hermitage or Bellevue ahead of everyone that's sitting at the light.

  • 5/17/99:  We are definitely better off with the stop signs. Maybe some police prescence at the intersections now and then would make people more aware. As for our problem on Chevy Chase, well there is no way to avoid it except by putting a stop light on Hermitage at Nottoway which probably will never happen.I personally think any traffic control in Bellevue is good. If people get angry or break the law as a result, so what. They are that type of person anyway. A few stop signs are not going to make them worse and may just slow them down eventually.
