News from Lt. James, 7/31/01:
In the first incident, the Walgreens Store at 1157 Azalea
Avenue was robbed
at approximately 2:20 PM. The employees obtained a license plate of the
getaway car. The vehicle was registered to an individual in the 4000 block
of McArthur. Units responded to the 4000 block and checked the area, and
located the suspect a few blocks away. Arrested was Michael A. Ewing, B/M
27, of the 4000 block McArthur Ave.
Regarding the second incident, we checked our activity sheets and we do not
have any units that marked out on Sunday morning at the CVS Pharmacy. It is
possible that the officers were doing some self-initiated activity "in
service," meaning that we would not have a record of the activity and that
nothing "significant" occurred.

Subject: Arrest in Azalea Avenue Robberies
Last night a joint task force comprised of officers from Henrico County Police
and the Power Shift of Richmond Police Departments Customer Service Zone North
West arrested a suspect in the series of robberies occurring on the Azalea
Avenue corridor. The suspect was observed getting into a vehicle stolen from
the Brookhill Azalea Shopping Center. The vehicle was followed into Henrico
County where the arrest was made. The suspect confessed to numerous crimes,
but the exact total has not been determined , as the investigation is
continuing. An update will be broadcast later. I would like to commend the
hard work and excellent cooperation the Richmond Police Department received
from the Henrico Police Department. Joint operations such as these can only
strengthen our ability to combat crime in the Northside.
Captain Paul S. Kiniry
Commander, Customer Service Zone North/West
"Mr. One % Better"
Here is a press release from the RPD on August 11, 2000 about a major drug
bust in Highland Park:
August
11, 2000: Working
from information from community groups and neighbors, Richmond Police zeroed
in on a neighborhood where drug dealers were claiming the corners.
Not anymore. On
Monday, Aug. 7, a Northside grand jury returned indictments against six
individuals on 22 drug charges.
The Cypress 7
investigation began shortly after Richmond Police received information from
the community and, at the same time, the drug dealers threatened the lives to
two Richmond Police officers. Police focused their efforts at 2nd
and Cypress Avenue.
“We had to send
a message that drug dealing is not going to be tolerated. And more
importantly, threats against the lives of officers won’t be tolerated,”
said Captain Paul Kiniry, commander of Customer Service Zone West. “Equally
important was that the community stepped forward with information that greatly
assisted us in our investigations.”
The investigation
took place during a two-week period. Richmond Police officers made controlled
buys using a paid informant, Kiniry said. “These transactions were part of
an open-air drug market and were observed by police.”
The following
indictments were obtained:
§
Odel
Jerome Bristow, 45, of the 3200 block of Arthur Wood Place: distribution of
cocaine (x2), possession of cocaine within 1,000 feet of a school (x2),
conspiracy to distribute cocaine;
§
Remeaco
Hopkins, 26, of the 1500 block of Clarkson Road: distribution of cocaine
(x2), possession of cocaine within 1,000 feet of a school (x2), conspiracy
to distribute cocaine;
§
Mario
Pegram, 19, of the 500 block of Hunt Avenue: distribution of cocaine,
possession of cocaine within 1,000 feet of a school, conspiracy to
distribute cocaine, and contributing to the delinquency of a minor; and
§
Three
others in the Richmond area, including a 14-year-old juvenile, wanted for
distribution of cocaine (x4), possession of cocaine within 1,000 feet of a
school (x3), and conspiracy to distribute cocaine.
During the
roundup of the indicted individuals, police stopped a vehicle in the drug
location. They charged Evans Gordon, 22, of the 1300 block of Mount Erin Drive
with one count each of possession of cocaine, heroin, and marijuana, with the
intent to distribute.
“We’ll
continue to work closely with neighborhoods and community groups to ensure
that the drug dealers don’t win,” Kiniry said.
He added that the
investigation is ongoing.
