How to Talk the Talk and Ride the Patrol

PLEASE BE ON TIME. Be at the guardhouse at Westminster-Canterbury a few minutes before your patrol starts. Fill out the sign in sheet, and load up the gear.

TEST THE PHONE. Call the Patrol number on the log sheet. Listen to Mauri. (All of it, please). Write down any locations that need special attention. Leave your names after the beep (the machine will beep the Captain, who then will know you are on patrol).  Then, when you are done with the message, PRESS THE "END" KEY. (If you don’t press "end," the line stays open, and it eats up the tape on the machine.  Then leave the 'phone on. If you turn it off, there is no way for the Captain or the police to contact you.

Drive to Westbrook Ave. BEFORE YOU TURN ON THE LIGHT. Some of the residents complain about the light, and we don’t want to annoy the folks who are furnishing the guardhouse to hold our gear.

KNOW WHERE YOU AREThe police can respond to a problem "at 1508 Avondale." They can’t do much about a problem "at 1508. It’s next to the blue house but I don’t know the street."

PATROL WHERE THE CRIME IS:

  • 4000 Block of MacArthur. Especially around 8:00 p.m. when Nuttall’s closes. Especially the alley on the East side. The drug dealers are gone from the Shirley Manor and the MacArthur Apartments, but keep an eye out in case a replacement comes along.  See the Team A News page for the specific information Capt. Beadles would like from this area.

  • 1200 Block of Bellevue plus the parking lot and the alley. Especially around 9:00 when the CVS closes.  Also take a turn through the parking lot of the medical center and look into the courtyard.

  • 3900 and 4000 Blocks of Fauquier.

PATROL WHERE THE CRIME COMES FROM:

  • Much of it crosses Brook Road.

  • Take a spin down Seminary Avenue. (OPTIONAL!Before you go over there, you might want to look at the crime data on Chamberlayne. There is much more violent crime on Chamberlayne Avenue between Bellevue and Laburnum than in all of Bellevue.

PATROL YOUR OWN STREET:

  • Invite a neighbor to come ride with you. Sign her/him up for the Patrol.

  • If you like the folks at the Garden Center as much as we do, take a turn through the lot there, and shine your spotlight behind the building.

THEN GO PATROL 4000 MACARTHUR AND 1200 BELLEVUE and the Garden Center AGAIN and again and again and again.

FINISH UP ON TIME.  Please get back to Westminster-Canterbury in time to turn over the equipment to the next patrol. Please turn off the light as you drive in (they don’t like it any better coming than going). And PLEASE fill in the log sheet.  Please be SURE to log and call in any equipment problems.
