The house at 1603 Claremont
Avenue is a longstanding problem in our peaceful neighborhood.
At the Board meeting on November 10, the Safety Committee reported this
situation, and circulated a Petition to have the owner and occupant prosecuted under the
Citys Operation Squalor. On November 21, 1998, the BCA sent a notice to the owner
and tenant that we would prosecute a nuisance complaint if they did not repair the
property. As you may have noticed, the tenants moved out, and somebody painted part of the
west wall of the house in late November.
Mr. Treger got the warrant and the police tow lot got the last
abandoned car from the lot in January. Otherwise, no change.
On January 26, 1999 President Chuck Epes, Team A Captain Diana Presson,
and the Citys Michael Treger testified before a Richmond Grand Jury. That afternoon,
the Grand Jury issued a presentment against Hugh Anthony Gomes and Barbara Tracy Bourne,
the owners, as well as the property itself, as a common law nuisance.
No trial date has yet been set.
In February, the Safety Committee tried to meet Calude
Cooper, the Building Commissioner to discuss this problem. Mr. Cooper stood them up.
As part of the research for the Grand Jury, we learned
that the Richmond Circuit Court has issued an arrest order
for co-owner Tony Gomes If you see him, be sure to call the police.
