l.      Where do I patrol?

We patrol the Bellevue neighborhood, i.e., the area enclosed by  Westbrook, Brook, Laburnum, and Hermitage.  We go outside the neighborhood once or twice per patrol to visit the Garden Center at Azalea Mall.  When things are quiet, we do a patrol down Seminary Ave. as a courtesy to our neighbors in Ginter Park.

2.    What specific places should I patrol.?

Please be at Nuttalls at 8:00 p.m. when they close, and at CVS during their closing period of 9:00-9:30.  Patrol at least twice on the street in front and the alley behind the Bellevue and MacArthur commercial districts (our two highest crime blocks).  After that, do the other high crime blocks (Brook, Fauquier) and your own block.

3.    What am I looking for?

  • Suspicious persons (folks the police have asked us to look for (see below) or who are "hanging out" or cruising, especially in the commercial areas, near cars, or in alleys.  Folks who move away when they see your yellow light.
  • Unusual activity, such as heavy traffic in or out of a house or apartment.
  • Street lights out, signs down or missing, blocked alleys, unsecure businesses, homes, or cars.

As always, please call in anything that needs attention and please log everything you see

4.    How do I use/set up the equipment?

Your Captain will take you on a training patrol and show you how to set up the light and the cell 'phone.

5.    How long do I patrol and with whom?

One and one half hours every four weeks with a partner who, like you, is police-trained.  Note: Once every four weeks, not once per month.

6.    Do I need to drive my car or can I just elect to ride?

Normally that's for you and your partner to negotiate.  If you prefer to just ride, we usually can find a partner who prefers to just drive.

7.    Am I insured when I am on patrol?

The police tell us that auto policies generally provide converage if you are trained (which you will be before you can go out) and if you follow the training rules (e.g., no guns, no chasing, no reckless driving, etc.)

8.    Where does the patrol start?

The guardhouse at Westminster-Canterbury, 1600 Westbrook Avenue.

9.    What do I log?

Patrol date, time, your and your partner's names, all suspicious activity and things that need to be fixed (see #3 above).   Everything you see should also be called in to the RPD's non-emergency number 780-5100 in addition to being written into the log.  Please also log your mileage (it helps when we total our activity).

10.    When do I call the police at 780-5100

Any time you see anything suspicious, and any time you see any street light, pothole, missing sign, or other item the City needs to fix.

11.    Is there more training?

You bet!  We try to schedule quarterly meetings in addition to the basic training.  Watch the newsletter or the web site for dates.

12.    What are the three most important things to remember?

     A.    Stay in the car with your partner
        B.     Do not be confrontational either in your language or in your driving.
        C.    Make sure the cell phone works by calling the number on the log sheet; then leave the phone on throughout your patrol.

13    What do I do if the equipment doesn't work?

Call your team Captain and log the defect.   If the flashing light or the cell phone is not working do not go out on patrol.

14.    How do I get a partner?

Talk to your team Captain.  Let him/her know if there is somebody you prefer to patrol with, and if there are any times you prefer or need to avoid.
